In 1689 Claus Weiss, age 19, and his brother Gunter, 17, left Germany to start a new life in the New World. They arrived in Massachusetts and decided to settle in Salem, where they hoped to start their own law practice.
In October of 1691 Claus met a woman named Sarah, and the two were married after a very brief courtship.
Due to the Witch Trial hysteria, Claus, Sarah, and Gunter chose to leave Salem in the early summer of 1692 in search of a safer, unsettled land.
The trio made their way across the country and in the fall of 1694, ended up on the West Coast, where they stayed for a short time, meeting and making friends with the natives and local traders.
After hearing talk among the tribes and traders about a “cursed” island off the coast, Claus and his family, not ones to back down from what they saw as a challenge, decided to leave the mainland and settle the island.
